The exam will have the following questions exactly as they appear here.  You may work on your answers at home and bring any writings or materials you wish to use during the test.

To answer these questions, use specific examples.  Mention particular laws and government programs.  Mention topics such as healthcare, the environment, working conditions and wages, taxes, poverty, etc..

1)     Begin by stating whether you feel you are you a liberal or a conservative, and give a one-sentence explanation of your main reason for leaning this way?

2)    Do you believe that history shows that free market capitalism works well when governments follow a ÒLaissez FaireÓ policy as the USA did in the late 1800Õs?  If you were alive then, do you think you would have been a liberal or a conservative?  Why?

3)    Given the laws and government programs that we have now, how well do you think the regulated capitalism of today works?  Is our economy fair?  Do people get what they deserve, or is there still injustice in the system? (Mention worker wages)

4)    Does the United States government do too much or not enough to help the poor and working people or to promote the public good?  Are there new laws or government programs that could improve our society and make it more fair or more prosperous? If so, give examples of specific laws or programs you would support.  If there are too many programs, which would you get rid of.  If you believe there is nothing more the government should do, than what should be done about the poverty that exists in our society?
